BIOR34 Plant Ecology 15 ECTS credits

Course description

Plant Ecology is the subject of how the plant influences and are influenced by their environment, how they influence each other and what mechanisms that determine the structure of plant communities.

The course is about the processes that determine where different plant species exist and how they influence the ecosystems. The adaptations caused by the plants interactions with the environment and other plants are another important part of the course.

On the course you learn to analyse vegetation data and interpret the distribution of plants in a scientific way. An important part is to read and evaluate scientific articles. You learn to plan and commence investigations on the interactions of the plants and their environment. We use vegetation data collected from summer courses in field botany.

A large part of the course is project-based, which means that you formulate questions in groups or alone and then tries to answer them. Both literature studies and practical work is included. We will use advanced methods to investigate plant biochemistry, in particular factors dealing with their nutrient uptake and metabolism.

And then …

This course will give you the necessary platform for work at e.g. county administration and information centres with issues relating to plant conservation biology, and plant ecology. The course will also prepare you for PhD studies in Plant Ecology and Systematics. You can choose to join several other courses within the fields of soil, plants and conservation. On the course Soil Ecology (BIOR24) you learn more about the soil processes and on Plant Evolution and Diversity (BIOR54) you can learn more about the secret life of plants.
