Linnaeus would have been overwhelmed !
Molecular methods have revolutionized plant systematics during recent decades. Systematic information is becoming increasingly web-based, accessible for anyone who knows how to find it and make use of it. This course intends to update and deepen the participants knowledge with respect to the diversity, phylogeny and systematics of the angiosperms (the flowering plants). The participants will get an overview of modern morphological terminology as well as the application of molecular methods. Theories and models dealing with evolutionary processes are discussed. Internet-based tools are introduced and tested. The angiosperm families are presented with special emphasize on cultivated representatives.
Studies are carried out at 25% of full time using an web-based approach. The web-based learning platform is called LUVIT. The course consists of nine teaching blocks, which each include information about texts that are supposed to be studied and exercises that are supposed to be turned in. In addition to the textbook, information is acquired from internet-based sources.
In order to study families of the angiosperms, it is necessary to observe living material in real life (=IRL). Therefore, the course has three compulsory meetings held on Saturdays. We visit the Lund botanical garden and the Lund botanical museum, as well as research labs. The first meeting is an introduction, the second deals with monocotyledons and the third focuses on eudicotyledons.
The examination is based on the results from the exercises that are completed and turned in during the course.
The course provides a solid foundation for occupations related to plant biology, teaching, nature conservation and horticulture. Recommended supplemental courses are the intermediate level course in Floristics (BIOF03) as well as the advanced courses focussing on Mosses, lichen and fungi (BIOR11) and Plant evolution and diversity (BIOR54).
