BIOR44 Limnology and Water Management 15 ECTS credits

Course description

The aim of this distance course is to give fundamental knowledge of the structure and function of limnetic ecosystems. Moreover, you will learn about environmental problems in aquatic systems; effects, causes and measures. The following subjects are studied:

  • Eutrophication (nutrients, food web theory, measures)
  • Abiotic factors
  • Benthic organisms
  • Exotic species
  • Temporary water
  • Biology of streams
  • Humic systems
  • Acidification and Organic pollutants

The course also includes practical training; sampling techniques in both lentic- (lakes and ponds) and lotic (streams) ecosystems, basic chemical and physical analysis, exercises in species identification and knowledge of common aquatic organisms (phytoplankton, zooplankton, macrophytes, macroinvertebrates and fish). Teaching is in Swedish and takes place on the web. The course includes two IRL (in real life) meetings; one meeting in the beginning of the course and one field trip at the end of the course.

Field work

During one week students get experience in field sampling (lentic and lotic systems) and analysis of water chemistry and organisms at Norr Malma field station, lake Erken in Uppland.

Examination

Final grading of students will be based on hand in tasks (7 individual tasks (including 1 literature project) and 1 group project).

Future perspectives

The course makes up a basis for continued advanced studies within the limnological field, for PhD studies and for a professional life as limnologist.
