BIOR54 Plant Evolution and Diversity 15 ECTS credits

Course description

What is a plant species? How do plants evolve? Why are there so many species of Dandelions? How old are plants? How come that many plants have more than two sets of chromosomes? How do plants spread their genes? Why are there so few endemics in northern Europe? Why are so many plants hermaphrodites? Is there sexual selection in plants? How do plants interact with their pollinators? How big is a plant population? What is a clone? How did plants come back to Scandinavia after the last ice age? How to conserve rare plants?

In fact, there is not a single answer on many of these questions, but we will tell you what is known in this advanced course in plant evolution and diversity. We will also teach you how to study these questions and the techniques that we use in the greenhouses, in our laboratories and in the field. The course is based on a mixture of lectures, exercises, practical laboratory studies and excursions.

Exam

There is a written exam at the end of the course, and to pass the course you also have to take part in exercises during the course period.

And then...

This course will give you the necessary platform for work at e.g. county administration and information centres with issues relating to plant conservation biology, plant systematics, plant evolution and plant ecology. The course will also prepare you for PhD studies in Plant Ecology and Systematics.
