Course contents
- Fishing equipment and methods, their selectivity, direct and indirect consequences for aquatic populations and habitats.
- Statistical methods for estimating fish numbers and handling uncertainties.
- Calculating the relation between fish population sizes and recruitment.
- Evaluating population dynamics in systems of different complexity, from unstructured single-species systems to structured populations and multi-species systems.
- Illustration of direct and indirect effects of different harvesting and management strategies.
- The fishing industry's socio-economic and bio-economic significance.
Course aims
The aim of the course is to provide:
- basic knowledge of sampling methods for fish and crustaceans.
- practical experience in estimating population sizes and in assessing the uncertainties associated with such estimates.
- practical experience in carrying out virtual population analyses (simulations).
- practical experience in giving management recommendations, based on population analyses, for long-term sustainable exploitation of aquatic resources.
- basic knowledge of different methods and strategies for managing or harvesting aquatic organisms.
- insights into factors considered when fixing fishing quotas.
